Best Speakers for Fender Tweed Bassman (5F6A)

(1959 Tweed Bassman and the LTD re-issue)

The Tweed Bassman, or 5F6A circuit, is one of the most lauded circuit designs in guitar amplifier history.  Originally intended to amplify electric bass, many guitarists found the tone to be very pleasing and began using this amp for guitar. Marshall is famous for having lifted this circuit design to make their JTM45 amps, etc.  The Bassman continues to be a highly regarded and widely used amplifier among guitarists of many styles.

Suggested speakers:

Suggestion #1: Combination of two 10A125 (8 ohm, 30w, light dope) and two 10F150 (8 ohm, 25w, light dope)

The 10A125 is a go-to AlNiCo 10" speaker. It has smooth sweet high end with a crystal clear response and smooth compression. These would be like vintage Jensen P10Q’s, which are a little beefier than P10R’s. (you will have to remove the magnet covers to fit them in the top slots on the Bassman, but they are purely cosmetic and will not affect the performance.)

The 10F150 is a very solid speaker with nice big tight low end, plenty of midrange information, and a rolled-off treble that is articulate but not harsh. This is a strong and bold sounding speaker which is best for players who are looking for a big punchy sound with plenty of headroom, without an over-abundance of treble.

Suggestion #2: four 10A125 (8 ohm, 30w, light dope)

As mentioned above, the 10A125 is the go-to 10" speaker where Tweed amps are concerned.
